SAM2 Data

Salhouse Parish Council two traffic/speed monitoring devices which are known as 'SAM2' machines (Speeding Awareness Message).

SAM2 is a vehicle activated sign that displays the speed of an approaching vehicle. If the vehicle exceeds the speed limit a ‘SLOW DOWN’ message is shown, once the limit is exceeded by 10mph the speed is no longer shown and the ‘SLOW DOWN’ message remains, this removes the temptation for some drivers to see what speed they can register!

Use of the 85th percentile speed concept is based on the theory that:

• the large majority of drivers:

❖ are reasonable and prudent
❖ do not want to have a crash
❖ desire to reach their destination in the shortest possible time

• a speed at or below which 85 percent of people drive at any given location under good weather and visibility conditions may be considered as the maximum safe speed for that location.

One device is usually located along Lower Street/Bell Lane and the other along Norwich Road/Station Road. They can be in one location for no more than 4 weeks and cannot return to the same data collection location for 8 weeks following.
